“You Are Here, Too” and open house May 3!

First Thursday, May 3, 6-9 PM

In a city in which the ground has literally shifted several times over the past hundred years from seismic activity or, more dramatically, human intervention, and in which it continues to shift through highway projects and rampant development, maps provide a link to its history and a record of the layers underneath.

You Are Here Too, an exhibition of artists’ responses to maps and mapping, opens May 3, 2018, and continues through August 30, here at the Good Arts Building in Pioneer Square. The works will be spread between two galleries within the building: Good Arts Gallery, inside Cherry Street Coffee House at 700 First Avenue, and here at  ’57 Biscayne Artist Studios, directly above it at 110 Cherry Street on both the second and third floors. The opening reception coincides with our first building-wide open house. See the brand-spankin-new studios on the third floor, meet the excellent artists working in them, visit old favorites on the second floor and in the Arcade, and listen to live music in the second floor lobby by the always-fabulous pianist Victor Janusz.

Incorporating images, type, or constructs borrowed from maps, or the maps themselves, the artworks in the show explore the topography of the natural world, political boundaries, the built environment, slavery, motherhood, and other phenomena that leave traces. Artists working in diverse media—paintings, drawings, layered collages, embroidery, digital media, and ceramics—include David Francis, Nia Michaels, Dara Solliday, Joseph Pentheroudakis, Dawn Endean, Savina Mason, Morgan Cahn, Beverly Naidus, Elizabeth Arzani, Ann Marie Schneider, Hadar Iron, Lindsay Peyton, Warren Munzel, Marie Abando, Tara Kraft, and Karey Kessler.

Third Floor Expansion: Updated Space Availability

Our gorgeous, light-filled third floor has some new swell Biscaynitos moving in this month, and we have just one space still available. All spaces are work-only, 24/7 access; rents include utilities and use of shared kitchenette, bathroom, lobby, and display spaces. Oh, and membership in the single coolest artists’ community in the city.

Studio 311: 910 Sq Ft; $2000/mo. includes utilities

This large space would make a FABULOUS print studio, shared maker space, or classroom. It includes an adjacent kitchen area, which has plumbing & storage, and could be converted to a darkroom, wetroom, or a separate space. A huge skylight floods one corner with light all day long.  Plenty of power, including a 220v outlet.

’57 Biscayne World Takeover (or, “Studios for Rent”)

’57 Biscayne is expanding this spring, taking over the third floor of the Good Arts Building and doubling in size for a total of 26 studios. We are looking for like-minded fine artists, craftspeople, and related creative entrepreneurs to round out our community and help move us into the future.

’57 Biscayne began in 2011 with some artists seeing an opportunity where others saw disaster. We built something new and unique out of “found materials”: the dispersal of one community, and our displacement benefits from a state highway project. Six years later, proprietrix Jane Richlovsky is a part-owner of the building, we’re surrounded by additional creative business owners, and we are re-inventing the role of artists in a changing cityscape: no longer victims but creative cultural mavens who share in its prosperity.

We are looking not just for tenants but for partners and co-creators of this vision. These spaces are still available:

#1: 280 Sq Ft w/window $700/mo.

#8: 195 Sq Ft w/ window $525/mo.

#9: 185 Sq Ft w/ window $500/mo.

#11: 910 Sq Ft w/giant skylight, kitchen $2000 GREAT SHARE, PRINT, or MAKER SPACE

#12: 635 Sq Ft w/giant-er skylight $1400/mo. Includes a separate room w/door and access to plumbing for dark room, etc.

Shared common areas include a wide gallery hallway with skylight; break/waiting area; another room with utility sink, kitchen sink, fridge & microwave; and a large, clean restroom. There is also a lobby and wide stairwell that has some big art in it and could get more (see below). Later this spring, a parklet will be installed in front of the building for some shared outdoor space and room for additional art projects.

We put on two coordinated 1st-Thursday open houses per year, with curated gallery shows, a ready-made following, shared publicity, and participation of other arts & retail spaces in the building. There are lots of opportunities to co-curate and organize these, and to use the common gallery and lobby spaces for your own projects at other times. Collaboration is our middle name.

’57 Biscayne is expanding to the third floor of the Good Arts Building, clearing out some museum-quality nineties office decor and replacing it with a dozen more work spaces for artists and related creative endeavors in early 2018.

Artists have already claimed these former corporate offices: the resident local life drawing group introduces office nudity and other debauchery.

The Good Arts Arcade: Creative retail & maker spaces for lease

On the rare occasions a space opens up at ’57 Biscayne, it is filled immediately, and we are always forced to turn away potentially awesome creative neighbors. Such is the demand for the diminishing supply of artists’ work space in Seattle (and most major U.S. cities). When Good Arts LLC formed to buy our building in 2015, it did so with the express purpose of creating new art space wherever and whenever it could. One space was built out of the second floor lobby in 2016, and now four additional spaces are being created in the downstairs storefront at 108 Cherry, which has been largely vacant (and playing host to pop-up art and music events) the past two years.

The Good Arts Arcade will consist of two retail spaces and two artists’ studios which share a street entrance and open onto a shared central gallery.

The Arcade will provide affordable space for the making, exhibiting, and selling of a range of creative goods, and foster a supportive community for the makers and sellers.

Flanked by the new Cherry Street Coffee House to the west, and the entrance to ’57 Biscayne Artist Studios to the east, Good Arts Arcade is perfectly situated for creative collaboration, fabulous combined events, and synergistic marketing opportunities. The location is well situated for foot traffic from the nearby light rail station, ferries, Pioneer Square park, and a planned streetcar stop at First and Cherry. A parklet will be installed on the street in front of the entrance, providing additional outdoor community space and a potential pop-up show venue.

Neon Dreamer: Interactive Pac-man Pop-up Installation all the way from Prague!

’57 Biscayne and the Good Arts Building welcome Czech artist Edita Pattova, presenting Neon Dreamer, an interactive painting and video installation, on the first stop of its West Coast tour. Neon Dreamer will be up for one night only, Thursday, August 3, from 5-9 PM in the under-construction Good Arts Arcade at 108 Cherry Street.

Inspired by the neon lights of Times Square on a visit to New York, Edita created a grid of nine oil paintings depicting an imaginary American city. On it, she projects an original video game, inspired by Pac-man, which visitors can play singly or competitively, becoming the dreamers chasing their dreams, beer, money, and each other through the neon-lit painted city streets, while dodging the authorities and other hazards.

Savina Mason installs her magical purple site-specific piece in the former corporate Zen garden, while Jane Richlovsky hangs new lights. Placiness will debut in our unrecognizably-transformed lobby gallery on First Thursday, have extended hours through Art Fair weekend, and run through August 28. Twenty superb Seattle artists represent, reflect, and redefine their city.

’57 Biscayne presents PLACINESS, August 4-7 at ’57 Biscayne in the Good Arts Building

Open First Thursday, August 4, from 5-8 PM and 12-7 Friday, Saturday; 12-5 Sunday

’57 Biscayne was born out of the much-ballyhooed demise of 619 Western, and in the years since we’ve become a kind of charismatic megafauna in the exploding urban environment of the boom-and-bust city we call home. The image of artists losing their place in the city often functions as a symbol of a larger sense of loss: While the decline of affordable studio space is measurable and undeniable, people also tend to remember places they love as having been in the past more interesting, animated, authentic–placier–than they are in the present. Whether that is actually the case or just the foggy goggles of nostalgia is debatable.

What is often lost in the discussion is what it means to the art. ’57 Biscayne, and other urban studio spaces, are not mere symbols to the artists who work there, but a base from which we observe, interact with, and respond to the city. PLACINESS gathers the visual evidence of what it actually means–from the artists’ points of view–to stay in our neighborhood and in our city: to live and move about and to look at things and people. The show encompasses representational paintings and photographs that directly reference Seattle physically or spiritually or historically; constructions that incorporate materials or found objects endemic to here; and work in a variety of media that is visually inspired by the streets, buildings, history, landscape, and humanscape of Seattle.

PLACINESS will coincide with the Seattle Art Fair, which is presenting sound art by Brendan Fowler downstairs at 108 Cherry.  In keeping with its mission, the Good Arts Building is hosting Art Fair as an Event Partner, as well as providing storefront space to La Sala, presenting La Cocina, a multimedia extravaganza at 702 First Avenue; and the Center on Contemporary Art at 106 Cherry.
